Back in my freshman year of college, my roommate and I wandered out to see the snow that had fallen the night before. We arrived at Pullen Park in Raleigh, and I took a photo of the scene that became a reference photo for this painting. This piece is one of my favorites, as it reminds me of my early days at NC State University.

This painting was inspired by my travels to New Mexico, in Carlsbad Caverns National Park. I wanted to encapsulate both the vibrant life and the extreme heat of the desert. The stunning pinks, reds and purples of the flowers contrast beautifully with the earth tones of the background, really making the subject pop.

An impressionist painting of Saguaro cacti silhouetted against a bright moonlit sky. Water reflects the nighttime sky.
This is one of those rare paintings where I didn’t have a plan at all when I began. It evolved from a southern rural landscape with a barn, to a seascape, to a lake, and finally to a scene with cacti and the moon. You might say this is reminiscent of Starry Night by Van Gogh (and I won’t be upset about that at all).

Similar in theme to my Great Blue Heron painting, the Eastern Screech Owl and the Moon is inspired by the idea that the divine (whatever that might mean for you) can be found in all life. The moon symbolizes a halo, usually given to holy figures in religious imagery, but in this case it is given to a screech owl. There is so much wisdom and clarity that can be found in wild places, and I feel it deserves to be emphasized. Print.
